Overview
The
SoftShell Software Licensing System™
is Bevan Engineering's new software licensing/copy protection system.
With the release of Microsoft Vista and later - Microsoft Windows 7
- we felt it was time to take our licensing techniques to a new level. Those
efforts resulted in SoftShell – a low cost and highly effective solution that
works within the confines of typical user configurations and permissions.
Vista and Windows 7 are more restrictive environments in terms of user rights
and permissions as compared to Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
Furthermore, low cost computers allows many more users to use 64-bit versions of
these systems. Finally, virtual environments such as VMWare and Virtual PC are
very common.
Our low-cost solution successfully overcomes each challenge. In fact, our
solution allows you to run your application in guest mode - the most restrictive
of user environments.
Features Custom security
Each application you develop is protected by a your unique password. Nobody else – including the developers of
SoftShell - will have access to your registration information.
No System Limitations
Does Not Require
Administrative Rights – once the SoftShell core files have been installed, your
application will not require administrative rights to run. In fact, as long as
your application allows it, your application can be fully protected during the
evaluation period while running under a guest account.
All NT Level
Operating Systems Supported – The SoftShell system will run on operating systems
Windows 2000 through Windows 7 in both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) modes.
Virtual Machines
Supported – The SoftShell system will treat VMWare and Virtual PC systems just
like any other computer.
Multiple Lock Types
Custom String – With
SoftShell, you don’t need to lock your application to any system identifier. Instead, you can lock the software to a custom string. This string may be a name, company, or email address. Whatever meaningful identifier serves your purpose can be used here.
Auto -
the best type of hardware lock will be automatically found for your application
based on the availability of your user’s computer. This is the recommended
setting.
Hard Drive – lock your software to the user’s hard drive
MAC Address – lock your software to the user’s MAC address
Processor ID –
lock your software to the user’s processor ID/serial number
BIOS Serial Number
– lock your software to the user’s BIOS serial number
Motherboard ID – lock your software to the user’s MAC address
Logical Disk –
lock your software to the serial number assigned to the hard drive by the
operating system
Windows Serial
Number - lock your software to the user’s windows serial number
Computer Name – lock your software to the user’s computer name
Multiple Trial Types
Trial By Days – your application can expire after an evaluation period based on days
Trial By Runs – your application can expire after an evaluation period based on the amount
of times it has been executed.
Option Enabling – you can provide your customers with a
license file that will contain information activated up to 24 premium portions of your software. If a customer purchases optional features at a later date, a new
license file can be sent (while maintaining the same lock type) that can activate those features. Any combination of optional features can be enabled.
Application Expiration – a registered application can be configured to expire at the date of your choosing. The number of days
remaining is available for your use (warnings, etc).
Deactivation
– If you choose to use to lock your software to a custom string
(company name, email address, etc), your applications can be protected from being distributed over
peer to peer networks. A list of registration numbers can be stored in your
online database and read by SoftShell. If the
registration number is found, you can take whatever action you feel necessary to
prevent illegal copies of your software from being distributed.
